Hello everyone! Today's Workshop Wednesday is about dyeing! For our Mashia Crafts stand at the Ybor City Market, we wanted to create bunting flags using materials we already had. We cut our fabric into 8.5 By 11 pieces and decided to give them a little bit of color! Check out this super easy tutorial that will teach you how to dye using stuff you probably already have at home.

Here's what you need:
  • Water
  • White or Crude Fabric
  • Vinegar
  • Food Coloring (I used the Great Value brand. It comes with four colors and is only $1.98)
  • Pot

Instructions
  1. Soak your fabric in warm water until it is completely wet.
  2. in a pot, add 4 cups of water, one cup of vinegar and one small bottle of food coloring (this depends on how light or dark you want your colors to turn out. The less food coloring, the lighter your fabric will turn out. Also, mix up your colors to get even more color options).
  3. Mix it up and place it on the stove on high.
  4. Place your fabric in the pot and move it around to make sure it gets wet with the mixture.
  5. Put a lid on it and let it boil for 5 min.
  6. Carefully take your fabric out and rinse it under cold water. Hang dry and you are done :)

Stay tuned for the Bunting Flags Workshop Wednesday on 9.19.12 <3

I had no idea you could use food coloring as dye! Tye dye kits are expensive. Thanks so much for posting!

Can this be washed later and not run? I want to dye a crocheted blanket but it will need to be washed every now and then.

Hey Marcia!
I am not sure about how permanent the dye is. When I rinsed off my fabric I noticed that some of the dye came out but that happens with regular dyes too. If you do try it, let me know if it works <3

I know that if u soak new bright red clothes in peroxide it will set the dye and it will not bleed onto other fabrics maybe this will work for what u are doing

This kind of dyeing will not be permanent. Acid dyeing works on protein fibers like silk or wool. Fir plant fibers like cotton you need fiber reactive dyes like you buy in a kit.

You can also dye plant fibers with natural dyesfrom certain plants but them you need A mordant to set itt it. Unfortunately many of the Mordant out there are pretty toxic but there are some that are better than others.
