Hello Friday! I hope you all had a great week! For today's Fashion Friday we decided to talk about buttons! Here at Mashia Crafts we love them! We believe that everything looks better with a button on it <3 well, almost everything! So, please enjoy this super simple tutorial and learn how to make these adorable buttons using materials that you probably already have at home! Enjoy :)
You will need:
Cold Porcelain (Get the tutorial here)
Rolling Pin
A sharp paring knife
Toothpicks
Mini cookie cutters (optional)

Make a circle button

Make a small ball with your cold porcelain.
Flatten out your ball by carefully pressing down on it. As you flatten it, rotate it to ensue that it doesn't lose it's circular shape.
If you have mini cookie cutters, use the dull side to gently press on your cold porcelain as shown above. If you don't have mini cutters you can improvise with any circular object that can leave an indention (even an actual button)
Using a toothpick, make the holes on your button :) Make sure that the toothpick goes completely through so you can see through the wholes. This is very important because when cold porcelain dries it shrinks and you don't want your holes to be too small.

Make a square button

Make a 3D cube
Flatten out your cube by carefully pressing down on it. Finish flattening it out with your rolling pin.
Cut off the edges with your knife to make the square sharper and round off the corners by pressing softly on them.
If you have mini cookie cutters, use the dull side to gently press on your cold porcelain as shown above. If you don't have mini cutters you can improvise with any square object that can leave an indention.

Get creative with trying different shapes. I also made some hearts and triangles and they turned out super fun! Set you buttons to dry in a cool, well ventilated place. Flip them over every few hours to make sure they dry completely. Stay tuned for DIY tutorials using these cool buttons!

How durable are these? For example once attached to clothes can they be put through the washing machine? Or are they strictly for decoration only?

Hey Nick! Great question. I personally have only sewn them on by hand and once on my clothes, i only hand was them with my delicates. I would love to know if they would be ok through the washer. If you give it a try please let me know! <3

Hi love the buttons, just wondering; on what step during the process of making the clay did you add the coloring?
Thanks!

Hey Kat! I actually added acrylic paint to the dough and separated them in zip lock bags after my clay was ready to be used. You can also use food coloring but I've found that acrylics work best! :)

Hi Rosie! One way would be adding a high gloss protective glaze to them. I use this one: http://www.dickblick.com/products/sculpey-glaze/

Hey Mimi, I just blend two colors of clay together but not all the way through. It works best when you blend two contrasting colors :)

I didn't think it fit her well at all. She needs a really good customize. She is so high that things have to be really completely best for her system shape.
